We are very proud to announce the Insight Youth Leadership Program at Insight BJJ. The program will be used to guide our younger students toward positive behavior, pushing themselves to be better/stronger people, community service, and more…
As in any martial arts, our students (adults and kids) achieve new belt ranks periodically. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), this progression does a take quite a bit longer than other martial arts. Especially for kids, this rank means a lot! It helps denote who has more mat time and what the pecking order is, but also who probably knows the ropes better. Like what type of behavior is acceptable at certain times. (For example, it can be confusing to a child that we are learning to grapple and submit each other, but during technique time our hands must stay to ourselves.) This is where the Leadership Program comes in.
The kids who have already passed into the Youth Leadership Program will have an “Insight Youth Leadership” patch on the shoulder of their gi. Not only will this make it easy to spot who can be counted on to set the best example, this will also be a visual reminder of what the other students are striving to achieve.
As a parent, you’ll have some power over this process as well. Our program requirements are split into two (2) sections: Home and BJJ Club. When a child decides they want to take on the challenge of earning their Youth Leadership patch they will be sent home with a checklist, the first half of which is for parents to facilitate. This will include acting in a respectful way towards, parents, teachers and siblings, to doing chores, as well as some form of community service. (see the full list by clicking on the image). This is meant to empower parents with some leverage! The item “Does shores” can mean anything the parent needs that to mean, and it’s only checked off the list when the parent says it is. =)
Once the parents have completed their half of the checklist, it is brought back to BJJ so we can begin to complete our half of the checklist.
Please keep in mind, this will probably take your child MONTHS to achieve, maybe longer. It will be more difficult for younger children… The BJJ requirements aren’t easy. Let’s be sure to encourage them on a regular basis.
As always, get with Coach Alex if you have any questions! Thanks!!
